I love

10 March, 2010 | Love, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

I love the feel of summer rain
in fall upon my brow
each drop a lover’s sweet caress,
each drip a timeless vow.
I love the feel of rising sun
that fuels my memory
and the night that holds just so
my wishes and my dreams.
I love the feel of autumn wind
around my weariness
like an order to about-face
and endure a woman’s [...]

Cocktails and little crumbs

6 September, 2009 | Life Poems, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

Life moves in and takes out
dreams, wishes, hopes and needs
and stirs and mixes cocktails
like a barman paid to be
a maker and creator.
It has no mind for me to sense
or heart to pump intent
but, oh, so diligent
it serves up and clears away
like one who doesn’t know
there always is a crumb or two
missed in the clean sweep.
Crumbs [...]

The memory of love

15 May, 2009 | Love, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

They’re back again upon the bough
that once tall, vibrant, proud,
portrayed a greatness way beyond
my simple understanding.
I reached upward in need and awe;
how can it be they do not leave
that which now stands so forlorn
unadorned, un-beautified?
And so it is that naturally
seasons offer grief and grace
and all who stay the manner, means,
of inciting memory.
“Remember, remember!”
Birds aren’t [...]

An accident!

5 May, 2009 | Love, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

Love is just an accident
no surgery can fix
and medication merely numbs
its sheer intensity
and indeed I take my daily dose
like you, and you, and them
unknowingly to procreate
a flow of ignorance.
The flow is fast, invincible,
and unstoppable
and pummels at the truth
like a tsunami
designed and made to suit
individual temperaments.
My tsunami is my look away,
my turn on heel, my shrug,
and [...]

A story, yes, but maybe not

17 April, 2009 | Love Poems, Spiritual Poetry | By: Helen Howell

Above where the stars twinkle and shine
lies the land of the now unseen
allowed to be free and loving
according to the dictates
passed through the ages to me.
It’s a land of calm waters and torrents
that find their own place to be
and a land divided by thought and intent
that ensures no pollination
between the flowers and weeds
in the [...]

Homeless Love

22 February, 2009 | Love, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

She thought to let the matter slip
into the garbage bin of mind
from where no reflux back into
the realms of heart’s desire.
So come the day when mind repels
this nonsense of perceived reason
the matter floats around about
the good and bad of each season.
Nowhere to go and homeless love
useless to man, beast, woman, child,
seeks to grab the podium
and [...]

The ideal

7 February, 2009 | Love, Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

What’s mandated must not be
a now and ever after deal
that ne’er can change or modify
what first was thought ideal.
Like me first there and then to here
a plan’s no plan if I’m not free
to formulate a better rule
according to the need in me.
The deal of then; how great it was,
how awesome to believe in you
and then [...]

Half measures

7 January, 2009 | Love Poems | By: Helen Howell

I didn’t fall in love like a regal queen
distant and apart from what a woman needs
or like a cleaning lady, a washer woman, char,
working every day to make love go away.
I’m somewhere in between like on the half-hour
or midday in the middle of the month of May
but maybe I’m a star in the galaxy of [...]
